Why Marceline/Princess Bubblegum Would Have Been Cool

If you know me, you probably know that I am a pretty big fan of Adventure Time. For those that don't know what I'm talking about, it's a show on Cartoon Network about Finn, a human boy and his companion, Jake, a stretchy dog. They live in a world that is slightly post-humanity and full of various monarchies including Ice Kings, Vampire Queens, and princesses of bubblegum. As Finn fights random baddies (and I mean pretty damn random baddies) there is always a faint observance of the importance of friendship.

While this show does focus on two male characters helping female characters and saving the day, a lot of these princesses are interesting, unique, and strong. One of the main female characters, Princess Bubblegum, has even been known to save Finn and Jake from perils. There are, of course, a lot of princesses that are attracted to Finn, most likely because he came in to save the day for them, and a constant dialogue between Finn and other characters about his crush on Princess Bubblegum. Princess Bubblegum does not reciprocate these feelings, particularly because she is eighteen and he is thirteen.

Of course, not all the female characters in this story are princesses. One of the more frequent characters is Marceline the Vampire Queen, a bass slinging, mischievous girl that, after living for thousands of years, is emotionally volatile, but fiercely loyal to the people she cares about (as long as they don't eat her fries or try to take the memory of her childhood toy out of her head). Since the beginning of the series, she appears to have some kind of need to harass Princess Bubblegum. They are two entirely different types of people (creatures?)- Princess Bubblegum is very prim and proper and Marceline, well, is not.

The fandom in Adventure Time has run away with this dynamic. It hasn't helped that art (such as the one at the beginning of this post) by one of the animators for the show (Check out her art here: http://natazilla.tumblr.com/) has displayed Marceline and PB in suggestive positions together. It should be noted that the artist herself does do random art for the fun of it. In fact, her initial genderbent art was just an experiment for herself to draw these characters differently. The actual genderswapped episode happened after the fact. Also, from an aesthetic perspective, Marceline's grey pallor and PB's pink hue compliment each other really well. But it did lead the fandom to wonder what it would be like if the show actually went forward with a Marceline/PB coupling involved.

So let's look at the latest episode that came out. It was entitled "What Was Missing." In the episode, Finn and Jake start chasing a strange door opening creature (named the Door Lord) that took things extremely important to them, such as a wad of PB's hair (Finn) and a blanket (Jake). As they go through the doors to follow the creature, they meet up with PB and Marceline, who are implied to have lost things as well. When they reach one door, they must break the lock by forming a genuine band and playing an awesome song. At the end of it all, it exemplifies how friendship is great and should always be appreciated, even when things get rough.

What made this episode particularly fascinating was that it gave the viewers more insight into Marceline and PB's dynamic in ways that can be riddled with subtext. For example, Marceline performs a song about it:

What is interesting about this song is that it's extremely raw. It also has lyrics that can go in multiple directions. The two main readings of the song is either that PB and Marceline don't like each other, because PB finds that Marceline is too unruly and vulgar or that Marceline is a very jilted lover that got dumped because, well, she was unruly and vulgar. Whatever it means, Marceline is pissed off.

It should also be noted that after the episode, we find out, well, what was missing. Marceline isn't missing anything, she is tagging along because she just likes going on adventures with them (once again, cue the importance of friendship). PB is missing a concert t-shirt that Marceline gave her at some point in the past. What makes it even more interesting is that PB says that she uses it as a pajama shirt, even though it clearly does not compliment her pink fashion sense. Much like the song, it can be read as either a friendship that went south or a romantic relationship that went south. There is no direct reading to the episode.

The response for the episode has been overall positive. In fact, the cesspool of Youtube comments has been strangely... not a cesspool. While some people still hold out that PB and Finn can find a way to make it work, there is a pretty enthused response to the thought that these two girls to get together. Plus, let's be real here: If any cartoon is going to have queer ladies, it would be Adventure Time, who just had a gender swap episode.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look very good for this prospective couple- a Youtube group that does recaps of the episode took down their recap (which included poking around at the possible gay subtext between PB and Marceline)-because Frederator, who produces AT, found that it was a little salacious to imply that Marceline could possibly worship the coochie shrine. Of course, because the internet is a terrible thing, people began chattering about the possibility of Cartoon Network pulling the episode from being reshown. The creators also said that they did not intend there to be any gay subtext. Marceline was just singing about draining PB's pretty face because she's a vampire and nothing more. I kind of call bullshit on this opinion, but for all intents and purposes, I will not go into a subject that I just don't have much confirmation on.

What is disappointing about this whole thing is, well, on a surface level, I shipped the shit out of this couple. I have an entire headcanon of Marceline flying PB around and letting her loosen up, while PB tries to refine her, with a constant plot of Marceline being wild as the problem in winning her over to the kingdom, not that they are in lesbians with each other. It's also disappointing that a production company, in this day and age, can be so fucking bothered by some people finding queer subtext in something. We've seen people ship Frodo and Sam, Spock and Kirk, and many other characters, but for some reason because some people wish to read a song that could totally be sang by a pissed off ex and have it fit perfectly, TAKE DOWN THE RECAPS AND STIFLE THE POSSIBILITY RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW.

This reaction has also shown how far we still have to go in media representation in queer characters. Many people after the fact argued that it's just as well that PB and Marceline do not end up together- children are too young to understand that queer people exist. Oh, all right, asshole. Have you seen Adventure Time's fanbase? The show itself is on at eight, a time that many younger children are getting ready for bed. Much of its fanbase is teenagers through college students, many of which have either met queer people or are queer people themselves. Even then, the implication that children don't know of queer people is insulting. Kids have two mommies or two daddies, or maybe they visit their two uncles in the city. Kids know queer people exist. And hey, maybe a lot of these kids are beginning to be aware that they are queer themselves. Maybe they don't have the "I'm gay" realization, but it could be possible that they are looking at their parents and they know they really don't want that. These children, especially as people begin to try and enforce tougher bullying laws, need to be given reassurance early on that you can be gay, straight, bi, asexual, whatever the fuck, IT'S OKAY.

There is also the argument that with the presence of queer couples comes the need to discuss sexual intercourse between queer couples. And while I tried to think of an academic response to this, especially considering I'm a well-to-do college student, I couldn't. I just laughed. If you look at many cartoons targeted at the same group as Adventure Time, you can see various instances of hetero coupling. A striking example is Avatar: The Last Airbender, where many of the main characters were intertwined in romantic, heterosexual, relationships. I've worked with a lot of eight year olds that loved this show and were aware that these romantic relationships were happening between the characters. I never felt the need to sit them down and explain to them that Aang and Katara really wanted to have sex, and the mechanics of it. In theory, a queer couple like PB and Marceline would not require some explanation of how to fingerbang, either- I think these eight year olds can cope with the fact that sometimes girls just really like each other and want to be with each other.

There are a lot of people that have accused the fandom of overreacting to this shutting out of the possibility of a relationship. While I understand that some people may be too invested in a pair of fictional couples, I do believe that a lot of these people have a reason to be pissed. This need to not even allow the subtext of these characters to exist shows the amount of progress needed in the media. It also shows how people underestimate the capacity that children have in reference toward learning acceptance and embracing people that are different, or possibly just like them. And, unfortunately, it shows how some people just really dislike the thought of two pretty cool ladies holding hands on a children's television show.

I'm going to the Adventure Time panel at Comic Con next month. I'm not fully sure how it's going to go down, but I do hope there is some kind of dialogue brought up about this subject. Obviously, if I get any deets, I will let you guys know. Other than that, I just want to reiterate how fucking badass a lovesong Marceline could sing to PB would be. And, of course, if you have any opinion on this subject, send it to the comments.

  1. I agree with you. What's really messed up is that it's not even the kids themselves that's seeing it as a bad thing. It's the adults. If a kid is told from a young age that two girls or two guys holding hands and overall being together is okay, then s/he will believe that IT'S OKAY.

Honestly. It's like some parents nowadays don't want their kids to grow up while practically shouting for them to grow up. It's ironic, really.

    3. You hae to consider the whole gay/bi/les/tran theme is still under the ethic/moral radar of MOST of the opoulation, the fact you think it's ok doens't means the rest think so. What I mean is that they're not lesbians/bi for the same reason Finn is not a muslim nor a christian. The show must be universal, and for now, heterosexuality is considered to be the "universal" sexual preference. Placing lasibans and gays on children toons is not going to help the rest of the world to understand homosexuality faster, considering USA is NOT the only country where Adventure Time is aired. It's cultural and it's understandable these themes are controversial.

Their dynamic is not only wonderful but honest.
They need to end up together!

    1. -.- are you serious? Modern Family. Two Broke Girls. The Cleaveland show and Family Guy. Archer. Xmen. Futurama. The Simpsons. American Dad. Most animes also have a LGBT couple or at least strong indications of such relationships. Sadly *sighs* most kids watch Family Guy, American Dad, South Park. Most parents don't even care if they watch those shows. Why should they care if a show on CN shows a LGBT couple?

    4. I repeat, it's not because it doesn't exists, it's because it's still as controversial as legal marijuana. Some people says it's damaging society, some other says it means society is advancing. oth sides have respectable opinions (as long as they keep playing it safe without agressions and flamings). Homosexuality as of now it's a theme relative to politics, ethics and religion, three things that shouldn't be on a kids TV show. Keeping the show neutral is the best way to show respect to everybody for now.

    7. So not being ok with homosexuality maes you an immediate homophobe? Yeah that means that all atheists are satanist god haters and all republicans/democrats are evil.

Not being in favor of doesn't means you hate homosecuals, they're people with their own opinions and experiences, but as of now it's not something you should slam on a kids show, the same reason why you are not seeing creationism nor stories about judaism as in rugrats.

  5. Donna, I've never read your blog before, but you are an incredibly intelligent and amusing person.

I agree with you. A couple of the things about this whole fiasco that kill me is that the AT creators "didn't intend" for there to be lesbian subtext in the episode, while at the same time it could easily be taken that way. Second thing being that there are gay/lesbian couples ALL OVER television shows and movies in general, but as soon as it reaches Cartoon Network over a show that is ALREADY incredibly off-putting and strange, it has to be killed immediately. What you said about the fanbase was spot on, this show isn't meant for small children and I doubt the creators meant for it to be that way either. Creators need to man up and face the soccer moms that are against the relationship with a defiant NO.

And to the people that disagree with this couple, who believe that Finn should be the one with a girl, you need to think straight for a moment. Like with almost any show, as soon as the main character is in a relationship, the show will pretty much downspiral into ONLY that topic. Not just that, but Finn clearly would not be able to keep it up for long, knowing his character.

  6. Addendum:

Even if children watch this show, they are going to get used to the fact that there are queer people in the world no matter which way you go about it. I bet that a lot of them already know that. Great, they learn it a couple years early. Better than staying in the dark and going WHAT THE FUCK when they see two guys making out in public.

    1. Yes, but you can't deny the fact some people thinks it's not right, or just are not ok with it, I don't know, but it's something personal, and showing it on a CN show isn't gonna help. Parents should talk this with kids, explain them about diversity, not letting the TV decide for them or present them the world as it is "or isn't), specially coming from such a whimzical toon that seems to be an acid trip, then, gays and lesbians are funny right? THAT'S the downside of important stuff like this being aired on these shows, they don't create acceptance, rather convulted opinions.

      Delete
  7. Perhaps it was Cartoon Network making threats, forcing the creators to, uh, set things straight. It's difficult to tell what their motivations were for the "retraction". I actually got here because I watched the recap for that episode on youtube and googled "PB and Marceline".

To begin, I'll mention that I loved this stuff when I was a teen. I admit, I was into the relationship beetween Raven and Starfire (these two characters are essentially the precedents for PB and Marceline--similar colors, personalities, and starting relationship, and note that PB has the same voice actress as Starfire). There wasn't a ton of subtext, but there was something for the fans to shape in their hands. There were a number of people who felt the same way, and apparently other shows, such as Kim Possible, did something similar. The female-female subtext market was actually pretty substantial back then. Important to note, the fans did not necessarily interpret any of the female relationships as lesbian in nature.

Speaking with this past experience in mind, I wouldn't worry about this relationship being eliminated from the show. Like its predecessors, the show will likely continue to display subtext, thanks to the contributions of people like Natazilla. But unless they get 'adventurous', it will remain only subtext. Don't forget that we live in a capitalist and largely western Christian society, and this is a show that's supposed to appeal to kids (even if that's not the show's main audience). Would an open lesbian relationship really be prudent for the longevity of the show? Would Cartoon Network even air it? This isn't a singularly social problem, as at least some of the other commenters have implied. Notoriety of this sort is not necessarily beneficial.

I could also say something about having a classic monogamous relationship, heterosexual or otherwise, between such strong and independent characters. In summary, I don't believe it would jive with the show.

Also, I disagree with your opine of the show's depiction of female characters. I'm dismissive of any supposed classic portrayals of helpless princesses being saved by a male hero, considering those princesses are hot dogs, slimes, mummies, and muscle princesses. It's a long shot from the Disney princess, who is usually preoccupied with her looks whenever a (strong and theoretically good-natured) male figure is involved, and almost universally overly submissive--even if she's supposedly a "fighter" or a "strong woman" (according to Disney, even strong women need to know their place, regardless of how much they, purportedly, "try to be male"). They're also being rescued by a spindly 13 year old boy, with references to adventure/pen & paper games abound. If anything, AT is making light of the classic Disnesque princess-hero relationship.

    1. This. I'm a christian, and tough I have my reasons to think the way I think about homosexuality, it's no reason to neglect them a place in society, as a homosexual is as human as you and I.

However it's still a largely discussed theme, the fact people here thinks it's right (or wrong) doesn't means they have the truth in their hands. As you say, it's not prudent to introduce this as well, USA is ot the only country in the world, and there are countries far more conservative (AU and Philipines for example) where this could mean AT would be out of business.

    1. That is so true when I saw that I was like.... wow even Nick is relizing that gays relationships aren't that uncommon

    2. The thing about the iCarly episode is that the kiss was played for laughs. The girl was obviously supposed to be crazy, and she's an outcast at her school, and portraying her as queer just makes kids think that queer people are weird.

What needs to happen is a healthy relationship between two same-gendered people in a tv show-- or at the very least a character who is comfortable with their queer sexuality. Not some strange girl forcibly kissing a random girl because the writers thought it would be funny.

      Delete
    3. ...Well, the producer of iCarly, Drake & Josh, Victorious and Zoey 101 is... a douche. Look at all of his shows, there are LOTS of rascist and sexist jokes, the fact they kissed was because as in japanese comedy shows, gays are supposed to be riddiculous and outcast, not because he wanted it to seem normal.

    3. Christianity isn't strongly against homosexuality. The Bible was against any sexual act that didn't involve reproduction because humanity was still growing and reproduction was vital for survival of the human race. Now, however, humanity is facing overpopulation so, in a sense, homosexuality is helping to combat this current problem! :)

    4. Overpopulation my ass, it's a myth, study some communications, that is a lie to cover up the shitty way richness is scattered arround population, and how consumism turns the ecosystem in a waste.

The guy up there should be sorry, us christians are not alright with homosexuality but being gay doesn't gives you an immediate ticket to hell in our philosophy, that dude is more condemed in any case.

This discussion can go on forever, I mean, as I said before, we're living in Plane Earth, the "gay war" for gay rights and stuff like it is taking place in MANY other coutnris, see France where it was approved but it caused violence and general discontent from a LARGE part of the population, or Japan where it's ok while you're a female teen, after you turn 20 being homosexual means you're immature. Putting it on TV like that is like making Finn smoke mariujana when his teeth hurt because it's a medical plant found in Ooo.

  17. Honestly,
I saw the ending of the song when she hesitated and then said " I want to drain your blood" and that stuff, but i personally think that she was going to say something along the lines of " I just want to hold you " or something like that. But I realize that the T.V producers are too much of a snob to realize a lot of kids know what that is.... maybe not full on definition of being homosexual but they know that it's not a everyday thing to see 20 homosexual couples walking around. I really was hoping that either PB and Marceline had a romantic relationship because I saw fan fic pictures. Or a least Marshall Lee and Prince Bubble Gum have a relationship. But yeah I really hope they get over the haters out there and make a relationship to please the REAL fans

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't have any problem with gays but the idea is just kinda stupid. Its established both are straight. Marcelenes song more came off to me as though they were at once friends who have grown apart. Forcing a homosexual couple into a show is just as sad as insulting the gay community on tv. It'd be a token couple. Just like if adventure time suddenly had a black guy pop up as a side character.

People are just looking too far into things. The homosexual community has never been more accepted as it ha been these last 10 years, especially when it comes to television programs both serious (deadwood, Spartacus, Rome, the wire) and humorous (will and grace, archer, the l word)

    ReplyDelete
  19. its not forcing a relationship when it is almost bluntly said, and being a homosexual myself it is not an insult to finally have a homosexual relationship on a T.V show. And as for homosexuals being more excepted, that is not really true, my girlfriend and I get told every day our relationship is wrong and we will go to hell for it. As said before if children learn it is okay to be homosexual or have friends who are homosexual is okay at an early age than they wont be like WHAT THE FUCK when they finally realize it happens.

  23. I completely agree, Nickelodeon's Drake and Josh had hundreds of scenes of, the character Drake, necking with many girls, sometimes more than two girls in a single episode. clearly no one had an issue with that display of hetero affection because reruns are still on air, but god forbid if two girls or perhaps two guys even cast a flirtatious look at one another.

I personally see several ways that episode of Adventure Time could have been taken, and I do not see anything wrong with exposing kids to the reality of different life styles. I myself have a niece and a nephew and I am bi, my nephew actually has two aunties that are bi and lesbian and they (we) were together for some time. my niece and nephew knew the whole time that Auntie Tayy and Auntie Nicole were girlfriend and girlfriend. throughout their lives I will continue to reassure them that being "different" is not bad. the only bad parts about it is when people make others feel like it is wrong, and how people still react the way they do to something that has been around for centuries.

And honestly, I think PG and Marceline would be so cute together. Ever heard of opposites attract? It makes sense! I really wish people would stop being so uptight about the fact that some people are gay. It's really not a big deal. Maybe the creators of Adventure Time SHOULD put those two together, if only to say "Fuck You" to the media. :)

  27. did you guys realized that that episode was based on friendship NOT relationships... think about all your fan made crap is bring at down at im not with or against the thought of pb and marcie but look back on what was missing, she sing "why do i want to..." mean why does she want to apologize do pb their were friends before, pb was probably to embarrass that marcie was the opposite of her so had to not be friends of maybe their friend ship torn apart after marcie met ash. but who knows, U GUYS CANT JUMP AHEAD FOR CONCLUSIONS,wait until marcie's back story airs then draw the truth! im 11 and im probably more mature then all you guys.

    1. no effence dude but its just RUDE to me to apply yourself to being more mature then everyone here is. I don't think age brings maturity but personality does be yourself but its rude cause you could just be saying everyone else is un-mature. i want them to get together there could of been either relationship there but i like to think there is love. at 1st i was like oh no but i wanted marcie and finn to be together but then i relized i didn't care and that it would be good if lezbians showed up on cartoon nextwork to say WHO FUCKING CARES ABOUT GAYS infact why aren't we all gay it makes more sence guys are more alike and girls are more alike together be with who you wont to be god people i hate all those mucked up dudes out there that think gays are wrong

  28. Well, "mature" friend, not every detail has to be spoon fed to you. You can't deny that there was subtext there. There's certainly potential for them to have been a couple. What the blog is trying to convey is "what could have been" not necessarily "what is". We can think up perfectly reasonable conclusions, there's no rule saying we can't.

I'm 15 and I'm not foolish enough to claim that I'm more mature than everyone here.

  30. What the fleep? I was brought here and read all this thinking it would tell me about what I actually wanted to find out: is there a thing going on between Marceline and Finn? I didn't want to know if there was a thing between Marceline and PB! I've seen every episode, and there is like nothing between PB and Marceline. They are like, just old friends. I have nothing against gay couples but Cartoon Network doesn't depict such things. This show is based about friendships! Yeah, we all know that Finn has a crush on PB, and I got this feeling that there's something between Marceline and Finn, but, yah, ya'll need to chill it's a kids show. I would understand if it was Adult Swim but it's not so chill

  31. Marceline and Finn have been pretty much sunk as a potential couple considering there was an episode where they flat out said they just wanted to be friends and not go on dates.

Plus Finn is goddamn 13 and Marceline is over 1000, I mean c'mon. At least PB wouldn't make Marceline a pedophile.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love this, I had seen plenty of the fanart shipping PB and Marceline but, when I saw the episoide I was like YES. Like c'mon i have plenty of friends but i dont wear the shirts they give me as jammies(unless i was in a relationship with them or wanted to be). I loved Marcelines song. This post may be kind of old now but, you just pointed out some good stuff that I had to say good for you :).

If someone replies to me telling me how I'm sick minded, against gods will, etc. LA DI DI DA DA to you. Some things are just interesting to point to those who caught on to the subtext. Dont like the post? Turn around and continue with your life, no need to tell others how "wrong" they are. Hope you remember Jesus loved all people and you have no right to say gay people are going to hell because you're not God.

Anyway, thanks this post was entertaining/amusing. PB and Marceline <3

  33. I've always found the need to "protect" kids from homosexuality o be ridiculous. I remember in sixth grade, we read The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde and The Cask of Amontillado. The teacher was happy to go into certain details of Poe's life, like his marriage to his teenage cousin, but never even mentioned the author of The Happy Prince. Then a few years later I found out a bit about Wilde and realized what had happened.

Oddly enough, many of the most homophobic people I've met weren't really religious, just stupid, and most of the religious people don't really care. Unfortunately, the loudest voices are often assumed to represent the majority.

It's pretty telling if this was CN taking issue with the possibility of Bubbline, since there have been a few gay jokes in the show. That would mean they're comfortable with joking about gay people, but consider serious, loving same-sex relationships to be inappropriate, which is not a good message to send to kids who are probably old enough to start using the word "gay" as "bad".

    ReplyDelete
  34. Totally agree about the gay jokes. Im just getting into this show, ive seen the first 2 seasons and sporadic episodes of the rest.

Didnt they admit they had a relationship on the official AT youtube channel recap thing?

Anyway, i also agree with the idea that this kind of stuff would help kids see that its ok to like someone of the same sex, or that people who feel that way are perfectly normal. It really sucks the creators couldnt stick to there guns (cause it was definitely there, though they made it ambiguous on purpose. The shirt thing sealed it for me) with this one.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Adventure Time is my new crack. I'm 35 and just got turned on to it. I can't believe how awesome of a show this kid's show is.

I didn't read the gay subtext in this episode -- I saw it more as an ex-friendship, where Marceline gave PB a T-Shirt as a birthday gift once, and PB (seemed) to never wear it but decided instead it was a good nightie. Then personality conflict, misinterpretations and other hijinks ensued, leading to the current status.

But after reading about this intepretation here, I am completely on board with it!! How awesome would it be to have a kid's show blaze this trail? It would honestly be one of those watershed moments where you look at current society and think, wow, we have finally progressed!

It would also be hillarious to see One Million Moms (ie, 3 moms and a facebook page) go absolutely bonkers over that possibility.

So while official AT cannon may never see this relationship, I applaud the writers for sneaking in little hints and the artists themselves pumping out the fan service!

And, yes, the writers do sneak hints of very adult themes here and there in this show. And it's awesome! A perfect example is Lady Rainicorn when she speaks in Korean. Some of that stuff is priceless!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I totally agree! Adventure Time is my favorite show, and I think that a Marceline/Bubblegum coupling would be a great way to show that yes, it's OK to not be straight. Plus, there are definitely adult themes in this show, such as LSP repeatedly trying to flash Finn and Jake so that she could get whatever she wanted in a recent episode. I don't see why they should censor a certain episode. Frankly, I would be much more worried about my kids learning to flash people than learning about lesbian and gay relationships.

  36. I FLIPPIN' agree! Marmar and PB should just get together... The world is a weird place, but people are just too NORMAL to accept it. Ugh.
Finn could have the Fire Princess.
    Jake could have Princess Rainicorn.
Aaand Marceline could have Princess Bubblegum.

Me and my buds love this show and are always updated about it. Although I think I'm the only one who supports Bubbline to the max, they could care less or more.

  39. I know it's sad that they denied any gay subtext, but I think you're right to call bullshit. I think this is as explicit as they can be, and that little ad using some somewhat erotic PB/Marce pics? That's their confirmation of what they meant.

I'd never read that PB/Marce were a couple before but now I believe it's what was always intended.

It's sad that this is all they can get away with ("word of gay" on the gladiators, stronger-than-hints for PB/Marce) but I imagine, once they think they have chance to get away with more, they will!

  41. I think people overlook things to much, i honestly dont think the writers meant for that song to sound like Marceline was angry at Bubblegum after their so called break up or whatever. I think they used to be Best Friends or something and had a bad argument causing Marceline to hate her. Anyway if you look at the lyrics of the song in a non-sexual way you will see that its actually about a friendship gone bad. Im all for a show having gay couples but i dont think Marce/PB is going to be one. Plus i dont think they would be a very good couple anyway, i always thought LSP and Turtle Princess should be a gay couple for some reason.

  42. I never really felt that "What Was Missing" implied a past relationship between Marcie and PB. However, that's not to say that there isn't feelings. Marceline's lyrics to the song, "I'm Just Your Problem" come off way more passionate- as though she perhaps lost more than just a friendship, even if that relationship never really came to be. She also blushes when she hears that PB holds the t-shirt close to her heart- In the end, I do think the episode was about a fallen friendship- but they were idiots to make it as passionate as it was, at least on Marceline's part. There's heavy implications to Marcie having feelings for PB, at least. Not so sure about PB's feelings...I'd LOVE to see them become a couple, but honestly, if anything, I see it as more of an unrequited love thing. Also, people saying they're both straight? The fact they've only shown PB and Marcie liking guys doesn't mean jack-diddly-squat. Ever heard of bisexuality?

Anyway, that's my two cents. I ship these guys hard, and I couldn't believe how many implications "What Was Missing" had. You Christ fags are the ones that need to burn in hell; trying to keep someone from loving who they want to be, just because of gender :/.

Seeing how Adventure Time already more than presses the limits("Oh my Glob," "There's no lumping way, and characters like Lumpy Space Princess, with her disturbingly manly voice,) I don't think it'd be a stretch for them to feature some homosexual characters. Sadly, if they do, I can't see it being between Marcie and PB. But hey, we can dream. I think it'd be a wonderful move for AT to take the initiative, and be the first show to boast of a homosexual relationship. But let's look at reality. It would probably be taken off air, or at least moved to Adult Swim(which wouldn't be so bad.)

  44. This is my first time reading your blog and I love it!
I agree with every single word you wrote here!
Honestly I think the song was about a friendship yet the lesbian thing could also be possible.
Adventure time is my favorite show because everyone is different and I think that's why kids like it too
The fact that possible homosexual feelings have been looked down upon is terrible
Many young children of 7 and up start to realize that they like people like them and they shouldn't feel like there's something wrong with that
They should do the Marceline-princess bubblegum thing they don't have to make it obvious like kissing or whatever but they should give it a shot
If they have that much of a problem exposing homosexuality to children they should at least move it to adult swim Lmaoo that would be awesome!!!

I Think it would be a wonderful idea to huck Marceline and Princess bubblegum up plus I would Love to see them together and Honestly, for those of you stupid dumbf ucks that think PB and Marcie don ' t get along .. than your not a REAL Fan of AdventureTime so I would suggest you to juust Fuck Off! Truely, the "I'm just your problem" song was a Both Friendship and releationship thingy. Cartoon Network should really just grow the fuck up and let kids/teens/adults see what the world is really all about! There are Gay/Bi/lesbians All over the world And their Has to be a Point Were A little kid/teen/adult will see and relise that their arn't Only Straight people But all Kinds and they will have to learn that their is nothing wrong and to live with it. For those of you "Straight" people who are agenst this .. and think [Pb should be with idk who the fuck ] or [Marceline with Fine] well then Your just way to NORMAL and Obviously Way To "MATURE" to be Watching Adventure Time so Juust Go Do Something else "Normal" and fuck off! ( Cus eht should be [Maceline w/ PB] and [Jack w/ Rainicorn] and [Fin w/ the Fire Princess] and [Who ever else w/ I d k who the fuck] ) See? Not that dificult right? BTW I don't know why cartoon network is tripping about little kids watching this if Adventure Time is for 7 and up, Most kids now a days already know what gay/bi/lebian is or have their own little "gay/bi/lesbian crews/Groups" or know A friend or even a family member that is that way. It is sad how Cartoon Network won't grow up and atleast give it a try And if they do get stupid bullshit about this them let's just make things way easier and move Adventure Time it to Adult Swim!
Boom .. Everyone lives happily ever after .. End Of Story!!!!

  49. I was raised under the context that gay people didn’t exist until one day I saw a same sex pair making out on TV and though “WHAT THE FUCK??!! THEIR GOING TO HELL!!” It was hard for me to comprehend considering my lack of knowledge. Later I left Christianity because Christians say same sex couples are wrong. And guess what, these days I find myself looking at girls more than guys. So DAMN YOU, you unaccepting assholes. I was raised to think it’s wrong and it turns out I’m gay. Children NEED to know about this sorta stuff, or they’ll end up hating themselves if they turn out like me thinking what their feeling is wrong. I hate myself because I know my dad whom I respect and love very much will never accept who I am because he was sternly raised to think it’s not right. Plus, ever hear of the term ‘soul mate’? ‘soul’ isn’t gender specific. SO, religious nuts who think I’ll burn in hell for my feelings, FUCK YOU and FUCK YOUR OPINIONS TOO. PB and Marcy may or may not end up together, either way, it's clear they did have a previos relationship (Not necacaraly romantic) Coulda been one-sided love. I've had it. 50. i never saw the episode like that till i hurd about it in an Adventure Time review a few days ago and that it was almost official, i always thought Marcey was just mad at her superiority and PB valued their girl time since it appears she has no other friends and she would be her only girl friend and Marcey was embarrassed because she had previously gotten bad at her thinking she didnt value their friendship. im fine with them being together (more so for their gender bent forms~) but i dont want that song to have ment that, it ruins my 1st impression and i liked that >< i want this kind of material to finally be in a non-Japanese show (no hate, im an otaku) and yes its been on TV before but the only ones i see it on are older audiences (not that AT is for kids, what exactly makes it so? the main character's age? he's 13 and iv seen main characters in hentai that age, does that mean hentai is for children, NO. no cursing? does doing that REALLY make u mature? the only reason it can b considered that way is because it has none of that so they have to rate it PG which makes ppl think its the targeted age group) and if parents r guna say 'that kind of mature content shouldnt be shown to children' then id say "theres 2 str8 relationships in it and u dont find them 'too mature' but the fact that they have sex in a different way does, i think ur the only one thinking about that end compared to a child 'but gay sex is perverted' newsflash, ALL sex is. and the only reason ppl r against it is because it cant result in a child which would spell the end of a species so its an instinctive reaction

  53. It is not that. People are mad by the fact that a more then friendship relationship between two women or two men can not even be hinted at. I also believe this song is completely innocent. But the fact that this show was threatened because Marceline's song just might imply that she feels more then friendship for PB makes me mad. To parents. If you are worried about how to deal with the topic of homosexual relationships here is what u do. If your child sees two men or two women kissing or holding hands or just saying "I love you" to one another and act like absolutely nothing is happening. As if this kind of thing happens everyday. Which it does. Your child (who is probably not worried about it anyway) will do the same. Remarkable huh? If they do remark on it just say it is normal for two people in love with each other to do that. O0O *gasp!* Its that simple.

What's so lesbic about Marcie and PB's relationship? If that's so lesbic, then I'm a lesbian. Huh, I must love all my friends that way, huh?

  57. When I first watch "what was missing" I didn't get the idea that Marceline and Bubblegum had some type of "romantic relationship", but they were once friends. Hell I just barely found out the big controversy over this episode the other day and was kinda of shock on how many people took this seriously. My cousins and my little sister are big AT fans as well. When I ask them about the episode and the idea of Marceline & Bubblegum being "lesbians" their response was the same as mine. When Marceline sings her song "I'm Just your problem" I really don't seen any kind of "hints" of them having some type of past romantic relationship. If anything the beginning of the song begins "I'm going to bury you in the ground." That doesn't really sound like romance to me (lol)and throughout all the episodes with Marceline and Bubblegum together there was no hints of them being together, but as if there was tension between them like a rivalry. Well anyway my theory is that Marceline and bubblegum were just friends at some point of time. That the two had some sort of fight/argument with each other and ever since then they don't speak with one another. whenever they're shown together there is no type of hints that they ever dated. At the ending of the episode it shows that Bubblegum item was a shirt that Marceline gave to her and I think the reason why Marceline was surprise that bubblegum still kept the shirt was because she thought she hated her. That bubblegum keeps the shirt as pajamas's, since she is a princess after all and wears "proper" princess clothing.

I'm not against gay relationship idea or anything like that. I'm just saying that to me they were just "friends" who got in a fight.

also wasn't there some type of message that the AT production crew wrote out saying that the "Mathematical" video on that episode were just "fan speculation"?

    1. Yea i agree neither me or any of my friends saw the lesbians subtext. Also yea the At Crew never intended any relationship subtext between Marceline and Pb and the Mathematical video was basically just fan specualtion.

  61. So... I found this on tumblr a few hours ago (http://wickedcloth.es/post/10788630328/the-writers-of-adventure-time-want-to-know-what) and I really hope that it is real!! I very rarely watch AT, but the only episodes I have ever seen are PB/Marceline centered ones and I love them!! But, check this site, do you think this is the real deal?

  62. i don't hate gays but i really don't like this it seems wierd, and i think that marceline may be a bi instead of a "gay" because she's like a teen she doesn't know if she is gay, straight, or a bi

  63. IT WOULD BE AWESOME IF BUBBLEGUM TRIES TO MAKE A HERO PARTNER FOR FINN(JAKE IS HAVING BABIES) AND MARCY FALLS IN LOVE WITH HIM BUT IT WOULD TURN OUT HE IS IN LOVE WITH PB AND SO MARCY AND PB TEAM UP AND BEAT HIM THE FUCK UP, THEN MAKEOUT.LOL

    ReplyDelete
  64. Such a shame they won't go further with this pairing. I honestly love the PB/Marcy idea.

Unfortunately they're probably gonna end up doing something dumb with the plot line and make PB turn out to be Betty and remember the ice king somehow or something, which would undermine her entire character AND probably guarantee that there would be no way of Marceline being with her in that way because it would be too awkward. :/

  65. one episode about two girls getting along and suddenly they have to be a lesbian couple, finn had more moments with PB before that so i guess that they should be togther, that is the logic being used here. feel free to message back to this I won't be coming back to this page

  66. Thank you SO MUCH for this!
    My opinion, in a sentence:
Cartoon Network needs to GROW THE HELL UP and let there be a lesbian couple on the show.
For those of you who say that PB and Marceline can't be together because they've both shown evidence of liking/dating boys, let me tell you one thing:THEY. ARE. YOUNG. Yeah, Marceline is over 1000, but in vampire years we can assume that's around 17, 18, or 19. I've known people who dated the opposite gender in high school and wind up coming out as gay in college, or even later. Ellen DeGeneres didn't come out as gay until she was an adult with an established acting career. I'll bet you she dated some guys when she was younger. A friend of mine who is gay said that she dated boys so that she wouldn't have to come out to herself. The same may go for PB and Marcie. If that doesn't work for you, ever heard of bisexuality? Look it up.
So here's what I'd like to say to Cartoon Network: If you don't want a gay couple on your show, then give the show to some other TV network who will be MUCH more accepting than you. If you would do it if it "weren't for the children", THESE KIDS NEED EXPOSURE! Gay love is NORMAL and if you can't accept that, then put it on Adult Swim. The show comes on late anyways. I only know, like, 2 "kid" kids that watch it, and they're over 9 years old. They've figured out queerness for themselves.
    Thank you.

    1. This is too true.

CN totes has to let go. I mean, they're pretty much ruined. Most of the kids who used to watch their channel area all grown up now..

Kids these generation know a whole lot more shit than they ought to know. They barely even watch TV anymore, they just surf the net on their laptops and tabs.

I'm in college and I don't even have a fuckin' tab or an android phone. I even know kids who know a whole lot of mature stuff that I didn't find out until my Junior year in High school.

They could put it in "ADULT SWIM"

They used to have that too. Now they're all about trying to please everyone.

I remember them censoring Sanji's smoke with a lolipop on One Piece.

Besides, this is pretty much the age of gay people coming out.

One day, it'll all be normal and no one's going to be disgraced for being with the same sex :P

  74. I think that Marceline and Bonibel are perfect for each other, adults are just pretentious its not like kids are going too know what it means.
kids are just going too think their friends i mean really there's nothing wrong with it. Marecline and Bonibel should be a couple their both wonderful and deserve too be with each other more than anything

  75. Before I watched the episode one of my friends said that she thought they were a couple before and I was just like "thats just... weird" not because that means their lesbians. but cause it's PB and MARCELINE. they just seemed too different. But I had a different Op after I watched "What was missing". I think it'd be radical if there was a gay couple on AT. I mean, lesbihonest, if there was a cartoon that would have a lesbo hook up, it'd be Adventure Time. I always thought Lumpy Space princess was a dude who was in love with Finn >.> . Anyways, I don't get how there's so much controversy over this, and there's none about "exposing" (or whatever) issues to kids surrounding pedophilia and kidnapping, which is basically the Ice Kings whole game. Apparently the issue was all of the "spicy" fanart and stuff. ? Are you telling me that there is no other "spicy" fanart of any other couples/shippings on the show? I betcha if I go on deviantART right now, I could find one (Finn/PB or Jake/LR). Anyways, it clearly, CLEARLY tells us that LR totally got knocked up by Jake so...? Whatever, I'd so ship Bubbline or whatever :) It would definately take out PB from Finns brain so he could happily be with FlameP without temptation. :P idk, even if they don't come to their senses and put those two together, a love/hate FRIENDSHIP would still be... some kind radical...(okay i dont really know what radical means. it just sound awesome.)

    ReplyDelete
  76. Btw, for all you people saying "OMG its just a friendship, she didn't mean it like that, god." If anything can be taken as a romantic gesture, a shipping can be created around it. Deal with it, that's how shippers work.

  82. I completely agree with you being 13 I belive same sex relationship would be a great way to show that a gay or lesbian relationship is ok in this society but for some reason cartoon network doesn't think the younger generation should think this. Also the directors of adventure time revealed (I think by accident :/) that PB and Marcy used to date I wish they would explore that more they're missing such a big opportunity for charecter development. - E

  83. (I'm the guy above) Also there are many strange things in the land of Ooo and if we cant have a lesbian relationship (which is 100% socially acceptable) I dont see much hope for AT's future. Also they openly show a old man stalk young princesses but a queer relationship is unacceptable? W-T-F - E
